Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
Cooperative Extension at North Carolina A&T State University is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Youth Empowering Agriculture (YEA) STEM Coordinator. The YEA STEM Coordinator will work in partnership with the YEA Program Director for the development, management, implementation, and evaluation of agricultural science, technology, and engineering focused 4-H content for YEA youth and families as well as manage a youth advisory board for the program. The primary purpose for this position is to serve as the coordinator of quarterly STEM events (hybrid formats) for YEA participants across the consortium of land grant universities. The YEA consortium consists of N.C. A&T State University, Alcorn University, Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State University, Lincoln University and Prairie View A&M University. The successful candidate should be familiar with agricultural sciences and technologies in the context of positive youth development.
The programs and events developed should appeal to and meet the needs of a diverse limited-resource youth audience and be consistent with the philosophy, policy and overall mission, goals and educational objectives of Cooperative Extension at NC A&T. This position assists with on-going program evaluation and recommends program revisions based on data and evolving needs of the audience served. In addition, this position independently designs and implements programs as assigned by the Program Director.
The YEA STEM Coordinator collaborates with the YEA project team to develop and implement relevant professional development opportunities for grant staff, teen advisory board members and program volunteers. This position works specifically to coordinate and develop youth programs that increase skills and competencies in agricultural science, technology, and engineering. The YEA STEM Coordinator will manage programs related to animal science, horticulture, digital agriculture and smart farming.
The YEA STEM Coordinator will also manage the teen advisory board for the grant. This will include conducting quarterly meetings and managing the teens progress towards their goals. Recruitment strategies and materials for the consortium will also be the responsibility of the STEM Coordinator.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The basis mission of the Cooperative Extension Service at NC A&T State University and NC State University is to extend the application of research-generated knowledge of a coordinated Cooperative Extension system in North Carolina and to bridge existing gaps so that all farmers, homemakers, families, youth and communities might acquire the practical knowledge and life skills needed to improve the quality of their lives. Educational assistance is offered in four broad areas; agriculture and natural resources, home economics, 4-H and youth development, community and rural development. Extension specialist on campus provide training and technical assistance to Extension agents and paraprofessionals working in the counties. These county personnel work one-on one with the families and individuals in the various programs. The A&T Cooperative Extension Program provides educational programs for limited-resource families and individuals in about one-third of North Carolina counties.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, engineering or agricultural discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Two or more years of experience working in a science or technical-related occupation or teaching. Computer literacy (proficiency in Zoom or Microsoft Teams, MS Excel, PowerPoint and Office, etc.; experience with statistical analysis software preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license and personal transportation.
  • Ability to travel and work after hours/weekends as needed. Must be able to lift and carry (load vehicle) program materials up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to complete work independently and efficiently.
  • Ability to assess the needs of the project and work towards successful completion of tasks.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team spirit.
  • Ability to assist with planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs. Ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Ability to manage time and resources.


Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Earned MS degree Computer Science, Engineering, Technology, or related field.
  • Experience serving in a youth organization or school.
  • Experience working with diverse underserved youth.
  • Experience in development of training curriculum/training materials.
  • Experience working effectively as a team member.
