Assigning Editor: Operation Sports
LOCATION

Two or more years in a senior writing or editorial role, deep knowledge of the sports gaming industry, experience covering major game releases, proficient with SEO tools, and familiarity with WordPress, Slack, Trello, Chartbeat, and Google Analytics.

Manage and engage with site contributors, assign and edit articles, write and publish own articles, monitor industry trends, improve editorial offerings, identify and build new coverage areas, and increase site traffic and brand awareness.

Operation Sports is seeking a talented Assigning Editor with a passion for sports games to lead the editorial team by managing contributors, ensuring high-quality article publication, and enhancing the overall content strategy.
Operation Sports is a leading news and content provider focused on the sports video games industry. Since its inception in 1998, Operation Sports has grown from a small community-driven news site into an industry-leading network with over 1 million members.
Founded and operated by experienced sports video games industry veterans, Operation Sports has long been considered the premier destination for the hardcore sports gamer. Now, we're looking to add a talented Assigning Editor with a passion for sports games to our editorial team.
As an Assigning Editor, you will have an excellent grasp of the sports video games market and proven experience in writing, editing, or management roles within journalism or other content-focused roles. This is a leadership position, working alongside Operations Sports' other editors, where you will manage, engage with, and develop the site's contributors, handling pitches and assignments while ensuring high-quality articles are being published.
Location and flexible working:
This is a fully remote position open to applicants from anywhere in the world, but we're particularly interested in hearing from candidates based in the United States and Canada, or able to work during the Eastern, Central, or Pacific time zones.
The ideal candidate will be open to permanent, full-time work, but we are willing to discuss part-time, freelance, and fixed-term contract options for the right applicant. What you'll do:
- Hire and work closely with contributors to increase and improve upon Operations Sports' editorial offerings
- Assign and edit articles, including news, features, reviews, and guides
- Write and publish your own articles
- Monitor trends and news within the sports video games industry, ensuring Operation Sports is always ahead of the curve
- Work alongside the Managing Editor to manage, implement, and improve all Operation Sports staff documents, including training docs and style guides
- Identify new coverage areas and opportunities for Operation Sports, and execute strategies to build out these areas
- Use organic research and competitor analysis to identify gaps in coverage
- Increase site traffic and brand awareness
What we're looking for:
- Two or more years in a senior writing or editorial role
- A knowledge of the sports gaming industry that is demonstrably deep
- Experience covering major game releases and live service games with various types of articles (features, lists, guides, etc.)
- Proficient with SEO tools and competitor analysis
- Experience growing a website with strategic and high-quality content
- Familiarity with WordPress, Slack, Trello, Chartbeat, and Google Analytics
- Existing PR and talent connections within the industry are a bonus!
