GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION

The Assistant Director of Publications in the Marketing and Communications Department should have strong writing skills and be skilled in various types of writing, including story-telling, news, features, marketing and web content. This position will work to keep the public informed through written communications for print, broadcast media, and for the Hinds website about policies, activities, projects, plans and events of Hinds Community College. As part of writing responsibilities, the Assistant Director will use the Associated Press style to rewrite and edit materials, including news releases, publications, web content, and scripts as needed or assigned. The Assistant Director will attend college events, gather data, research material, conduct interviews, and write news releases, feature articles, people profiles, public service announcements, material for special publications, assist with scripts for audio-visual productions, and any other writing as needed, with an emphasis on news and feature writing. This position will also help direct the overall coverage of college events and programs to put the college in the best light whenever possible. This position will assist the Director of Publications in planning and organizing content for all publications, including the On-Campus employee newsletter and Hindsight alums/Foundation magazine, as well as other projects. This person must have the ability to be flexible, creative, forward-thinking, and work efficiently with internal and external constituencies. Any other skills, such as photography or graphic design, are a plus but optional to the functions of the position.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in public relations, journalism, communications, new media, or a directly related field, and one (1) year of directly related experience; proficiency in utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Verifiable experience in planning and organizing content for projects such as publications and brochures.
DESIRED: A master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in public relations, journalism, communications, new media, or a directly related field and a
minimum of one (1) year of directly related experience; OR at least 18 graduate hours in journalism-related. Proficiency in photography, video, or graphic design experience utilizing Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign and Photoshop.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.

- Conduct research and make notes to retain ideas, develop factual information, and obtain authentic detail.
- Plan and organize material for publications or special projects.
- Using current Associated Press journalism writing style, write, rewrite, and edit news releases, feature articles, public service announcements, publications, website content, blogs, or any other material for the media or in-house use and other materials for distribution to the press.
- Promote and maintain contact with media representatives.
- Photograph assignments or help coordinate photo assignments for news releases and publications.
- Take the lead as a writer for the On Campus monthly employee newsletter, including working with various college departments to assemble a list of the proposed content of stories and photographs, and take responsibility with the Publications Director in seeing the newsletter through production, including proofing and correcting.
- In conjunction with the Alumni Coordinator, assemble a list of the proposed content of stories and photographs for the Hindsight alum magazine, take the lead as a writer, and take responsibility with the Publications Director for seeing the magazine through production, including proofing and correcting.
- Take the lead role for the Eagle Archive publication that documents student activities, honors and awards.
- Assist college administrators, faculty, and staff with writing and editing copy for special projects.
- Conduct interviews for news releases, features, people profiles, news articles, and publications as assigned by the Publications director.
- Continuously search for innovative ideas for news releases and article information through contact with all college locations and outside sources to keep the public informed about the college.
- Be proficient in the use of a personal computer including email and able to learn new applications with relative ease, such as project management and photo archive applications.
- Attend professional development workshops or conferences to upgrade job skills and knowledge.
- The individual will work on other projects requested by the Publications Director, Executive Director for Marketing and Communications, Chief of Staff, college President, and other department colleagues.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual will supervise projects, not people, as part of a team.
