SHORT DESCRIPTION
This administrative role involves managing events and programs for the Department of Leisure Services, including planning, implementation, evaluation, and community engagement to enhance public services.
Description
Major Duties
- Plans, organizes, implements, and supervises new and assigned events and programs (for youth, adults, senior adults and/or therapeutics).
- Assists in the coordination, development, organization, and implementation of summer camps, afterschool programs, recreation center programs, and community events as needed .
- Develops, recommends, coordinates, and implements new departmental special events, education and cultural related programs that meet community needs.
- Evaluates and assesses the effectiveness of each programming area and implement improvements (within scope) as needed or provide recommendations to supervisor.
- Tracks program/event services provided to include monitoring results and providing operational reports as needed.
- Researches and investigates grant/funding opportunities for new program implementation and identifies available funding to improve current programs.
- Recruits sponsors to finance various events and/or programs.
- Supervises and monitors events and activities to enforce and ensure rules and department/safety standards are adhered.
- Prepares news articles, press releases, calendar events, brochures, advertisement flyers, social media posts and related public information/relation materials.
- Coordinates event and program recruitment and registration.
- Makes recommendations for changes and/or expansions to event and programs.
- Supervises, trains, hires, and advises volunteer personnel, part-time and seasonal employees.
- Recommends and procures the purchase of supplies and equipment for programs and events.
- Responds to questions, concerns, and complaints from the public and other interested parties.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of programming activities for youth, adults, senior adults, and therapeutics.

- Ability to prepare and maintain records regarding program/event participation, needs, costs, etc.
- Ability to organize and conduct program/event training with staff.
- Ability to coordinate recreational activities involving several participants.
- Ability to work at least eight (8) hours per day, forty (40) hours per week, or such hours as the City determines necessary to meet operational requirements.
- Ability to work overtime as the City determines necessary to meet operational requirements.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays as the City determines necessary to meet operational requirements.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Assistant Leisure Services Director-Programs and/or the Recreation Program Coordinator assign work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor observes and reviews work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include relevant program/event guidelines, specific program, city, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related program and event planning through implementation. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to develop, organize, supervise, and participate in assigned departmental events and programs. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of services to the public.

- Contacts are typically with supervisors, coworkers, sponsors, other city personnel, volunteers, part-time and seasonal staff, vendors, and the public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects up to 50lbs.
- The work is typically performed in an office, various department facilities and/or outdoors, occasionally in cold, hot, or inclement weather.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over full time, part time, seasonal, and volunteer personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited* college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Marketing, Business Administration, Public Administration, Education, Hospitality Management, or closely related field, and
- Two (2) years recent experience in managing and/or developing events for the public; and
- One (1) year recent experience in the use of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel); and
- One (1) year recent experience developing and managing non-athletic events. (Examples of non-athletic programming are Esports tournament, adult Easter Egg Hunt, Mother/Son Olympics, Santa and Pet Photo event, etc.).
- One (1) year recent experience in the use of Photoshop and/or Canva preferred.
- One (1) year recent experience in social media marketing for programs and/or events preferred.
- Possession of a valid American Red Cross CPR/AED certification preferred.
Accredited through an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

- Employees in this position are required to obtain/maintain a Class C with passenger endorsement Commercial Driver License (CDL) within six (6) months of employment/promotion/demotion/ transfer. (See condition for details.)
