The Associate Director of Digital Strategy will lead Berklee's digital initiatives, ensuring optimal user experiences and managing a team to meet strategic institutional objectives.

Job Description:
The Associate Director of Digital Strategy leads the strategic direction and management of Berklee's digital ecosystem, encompassing Berklee’s main website, related sub-domains, the Berklee Hub, and other websites and platforms. As a key member of the Communications & Marketing team, this position ensures Berklee’s digital platforms deliver exceptional experiences for the Berklee community.

The ADDS oversees a team of developers and collaborates with stakeholders, designers, editors, content contributors, and third-party vendors to manage day-to-day operations, execute development initiatives, and deliver long-term projects that align with the institution's strategic objectives. Leveraging expertise in product management, project management, and user experience (UX), the ADDS uses data-driven insights to advance digital innovation and improve user engagement.

An effective communicator, collaborator, and problem solver, the ADDS is detail-oriented and passionate about creating impactful digital products and experiences that resonate with Berklee’s diverse audiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Strategic Planning and Leadership
    • Collaborate with the Director of Communications and Senior Director, Marketing Operations & Technology to define and execute Berklee’s digital strategy roadmap, identifying and prioritizing digital needs and driving the creation of new features.
    • Lead project discovery and creation of technical specifications. Work cooperatively with the team, partners, and stakeholders to interpret needs, advise on options, gather and review requirements, and develop proposed courses of action.
    • Effectively balance the scope and timeline of projects, ensuring that both immediate operational needs and long-term strategic objectives are met.
    • Proactively evaluate emerging technologies and trends, integrating them into Digital Strategy’s operations to optimize efficiency and elevate digital capabilities, and identify new approaches to development, user experience, and design.

  • Team Management
    • Lead and manage the software development team, providing guidance, support, and performance feedback. Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture
    • Oversee the team’s daily operations, ensuring high-quality delivery of product features on time and in budget
    • Recruit, hire, and manage contractors within the Digital Strategy team.
    • Manage vendor contracts, freelance contractors, multimedia serving, and hosting vendors.

  • Cross-Departmental Coordination and User Support
    • Serve as a primary point of contact for stakeholders across the institution. Ensure clear communication about digital updates and initiatives
    • Ensure alignment of web-related design and branding across Berklee sites, apps, and other tools
    • Provide strategic guidance to partners on leveraging digital platforms to achieve departmental goals, including SEO best practices, and sustainable, customer-centric content strategies.
    • Oversee high-quality user support, and provide direct support as necessary, to various categories of users, including content managers and Hub users
    • Develop and maintain clear and comprehensive documentation
    • Manage Berklee’s email platform for non-enrollment marketing emails for departmental use across the institutions, including the development of templates and data integrations as appropriate, in collaboration with the Director of Communications.

  • Data and System Management
    • Work cooperatively with the ITS department and other technical staff to address systems integration and hosting needs; analyze complex technical and communications needs; supervise sustainable, long-term solutions.
    • Represent the Digital Strategy team on the Data Governance and Student Data Governance committees to ensure Berklee’s various data systems are kept in sync.
    • Handle advanced Drupal configuration tasks that require an in-depth, technical understanding of the system.
    • Monitor site performance and promote data-driven decision-making by managing a robust web analytics and reporting infrastructure. Support stakeholders to monitor and report on user acquisition and behavior.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum of five years experience in digital strategy, product management, or a related role. Proven experience managing teams of developers and cross-functional digital teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in design, technical, or communications field (or equivalent experience).
  • Technical expertise with web applications and associated technologies: HTML, CSS, web audio/video formats, Javascript, and Google Analytics
  • Working knowledge of information architecture, UX design, content management systems such as Drupal or Wordpress.
In addition to the above requirements, the successful candidate will bring many of the following experiences and qualities:
  • Strong project management skills. Experience with agile project management methodologies and tools (Jira and/or Asana experience a plus).
  • Superior organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities, set and meet deadlines, multi-task, and balance technical, editorial, design, and customer support issues.
  • Strong communications skills. Proven ability to balance customer needs with the larger goals of the institution, and to manage clients and their expectations.
  • Excellent leadership and collaboration skills. Ability to lead and interact effectively with individuals and groups at all levels of the institution, maintaining a respectful relationship with teammates and others.
  • Strong analytical skills. Ability to gather and analyze data to generate actionable insights and make informed decisions
  • Great attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Demonstrated ability to master continually changing, web-related technologies. Well-read and up-to-date on digital strategy and project management philosophy, process and tools. Certifications in product management, UX design a plus
  • Experience in higher education or nonprofit, marketing, communications, music, and/or the performing arts.
