SHORT DESCRIPTION

The Business Development Liaison is responsible for obtaining referrals and building relationships within the healthcare community to meet census expectations for Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care.

Founded in 1982 as Joliet Area Community Hospice, Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care is an independent, nonprofit healthcare provider licensed in 11 counties in northwest Illinois. We provide exceptional serious illness care, hospice care and grief support for adults and children.


The majority of our direct patient care is in the field with Lightways team members providing care in the home, nursing facility or assisted living facility. We also have a 20-bed inpatient unit in Joliet. Non-clinical staff are based out of our Joliet administrative offices.


The Business Development Liaison is responsible for obtaining referrals to meet census expectations in our Northern territories. This position is also expected to establish and maintain positive relationships with customers, facilities, physicians, hospitals, and all other referral sources. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintains comprehensive working knowledge of markets including government agencies, major payer groups, key referral sources, and competitor’s market positioning.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with current and potential referral sources and referral influencers in the community.
  • Identifies physician referral opportunities within the medical community through research and prospecting.
  • Establishes and maintains ongoing communications with referring providers and/or their office staff, including routine or follow-up visits in person, or through emails and phone calls.
  • Builds and monitors community, customer and patient perceptions of Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care as a high-quality provider of services.
  • Identifies and coordinate speaking opportunities within hospitals, ALFs, and SNFs.
  • Maintains comprehensive working knowledge of community resources and assists customers in accessing community resources should services not be provided by Lightways.
  • Support intake and admissions as needed including consent signing for hospice and serious illness care.
  • Input weekly schedule in coordination with Director of Business Development.
  • Record activities daily and monitor referrals from those activities.
  • Utilize data to gain competitive information and monitor our referral, admission, market share, re-hospitalization rates etc.
  • Maintains community visibility, participates in Chamber of Commerce or similar membership organizations, attends networking programs.
  • Collaborate with marketing and event specialists to assist with marketing and events.
  • Attend all Lightways events which includes evenings and weekends.

The qualified candidate will have a degree in Healthcare or Business Administration and a minimum of 3-5 years experience in healthcare. Qualified candidates are required to have the following skills:

  • Demonstrated sales experience in a healthcare setting with long-term care experience preferred.
  • Successful track record identifying and building local relationships.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities with excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills.

This is a full time position eligible for full benefits after 30 days. Lightways offers medical, dental, vision, a generous paid time off (PTO) plan and a 401k with a matching benefit.
