The Communications Specialist will create and implement effective communication strategies for Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland, ensuring brand consistency and engaging the community through various media platforms.

Position Summary
The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing internal and external communication messaging and tactics for Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland.

Major Accountabilities

  • Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to develop and implement communication strategies to meet Council and department goals.
  • Serve as Brand Champion to provide consistent oversight to ensure the image of the organization is appropriately projected to all audiences while adhering to the current GSUSA brand guidelines.
  • Ability to clearly articulate the Girl Scout Value Proposition through written and verbal avenues.
  • Responsible for managing the social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube as well as daily monitoring and maintenance of social media channels with relevant, engaging content.
  • Responsible for managing council-wide email content and distribution of messaging through the Marketing Cloud email marketing system.
  • Manage website content and function through the Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) software.
  • Research content, write articles and manage the production schedule for various council-wide print publications and other publications as they arise.
  • Serve as a community liaison with key media sources, other community groups, civic organizations, educational institutions, etc.
  • Present on behalf of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland, working with other departments to promote upcoming events, product sales, and other activities.
  • Serve as photographer at council events as needed.
  • Seek opportunities for promotion of Girl Scout programs which support the recruitment of girls and adults, attract new funding sources, and increase general public awareness of Girl Scouts, while coordinating these efforts with relevant staff.
  • Collaborate with graphic designer to effectively create both content and imagery to engage audiences of the website, social media channels, and print materials.
  • Act as support to the Fund Development department as needed.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with Communications, Marketing, or Public Relations
  • Strong written and verbal skills including news releases, articles, scripts, and grant applications and proposals
  • 2+ years of experience with email marketing software and social media coordination.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Public speaking experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Adobe Creative Suite

Hours/Travel

  • 10% travel – requires reliable access to vehicle
  • Expectation of working evenings and weekends to support council-wide events (average of one event per quarter)

Credentials, Licenses or Designations

  • Valid Kansas driver’s license, access to reliable transportation
  • Proof of insurance

  • Physical ability to frequently stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull, lift and move objects up to 25 pounds at shoulder height, and occasionally lift in excess of 25 pounds.
  • Demonstrated normal depth perception.
  • See and read printed materials, with or without visual aids; distinguish colors; read and understand rules and policies, labels and instructions.
  • Verbal communication including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels.
  • Other demands, as determined by the council.
