SHORT DESCRIPTION

Seeking a Community Manager to enhance engagement among diverse communities in Wisconsin by overseeing volunteers, creating content, and ensuring accurate dissemination of civic-related information.

About Us
Civic Media has built a statewide radio and digital media network in Wisconsin with the goal of championing the practice of democracy by empowering honest and informative local voices. We’re merging the legacy of radio with the immediacy of digital to deliver high-quality content to a growing audience via our 21 radio stations, websites, mobile app, and associated social media platforms. We work in a fast-paced environment that values communication, integrity, vision, innovation, and collaboration in order to fulfill our vision of being the media platform that informs, guides, and inspires our audience through the complex landscape of information, commentary, and civic engagement.

Position Overview
We’re looking for a Community Manager to strengthen meaningful engagement among our statewide audience. You’ll oversee volunteer “ambassadors,” collaborate with internal teams, create new content based on local feedback, and ensure that Civic Media’s mission and information reach diverse communities across Wisconsin. The focus is on delivering valuable, issue-based information and gathering input about local concerns affecting our listeners. Some travel will be required to meet with communities and represent Civic Media at events. While the position is hybrid, applicants must reside in Wisconsin. You’ll work remotely and visit our stations and communities as needed.

Key Responsibilities

1. Community Building

• Identify and foster relationships within local, regional, and topical groups aligned with our content and mission.

• Engage with community members—especially via local Facebook groups—by sharing relevant insights from our programming and inviting discussion around local news and civic issues.

• Encourage audiences to voice the concerns and topics most pressing in their communities, relaying that feedback to Civic Media’s shows and internal teams.

2. Volunteer Coordination

• Recruit, onboard, and support a small network of volunteer ambassadors who share our content and mission in their local areas.

• Provide resources, best practices, and consistent messaging to volunteers, ensuring they focus on valuable information-sharing rather than promotion.

3. Content & Social Media Collaboration

• Partner with the content team to plan and publish posts that highlight key information from our shows—focusing on community needs.

• Independently produce short-form articles, social posts, or multimedia content that addresses trending issues raised by local audiences.

4. Event Participation & Travel

• Represent Civic Media at select events (digital or in-person) to connect with community members, listen to local concerns, and reinforce our civic engagement focus.

• Travel as needed to various parts of Wisconsin to meet with volunteers, attend local gatherings, and foster community ties.

• Document and share event takeaways, success stories, and opportunities for follow-up.

Chief Duties

  • Develop in local, regional and topical Facebook Groups that align with our content or coverage areas
  • Improve the sharing and interaction around our content.
  • Help relay questions and information from those communities to internal stakeholders (producers, reporters, content creators and leadership)
  • Develop a content marketing plan and key objectives in the coming year.
  • Improve organizational coordination and communication, including adding relevant information to our content calendar on a daily basis.
  • Create engaging and shareable content for websites, blogs, Facebook pages, newsletters and/or viral content (text, images, video or audio).
  • Monitor social media campaigns and analyze web traffic from the online community using key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Participate in social events, corporate events and workshops.

Qualifications

Education & Experience: Associate’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field; Bachelor’s preferred. Proven experience in social media management, community engagement, or volunteer oversight.

Community Organizing: Demonstrated history of organizing around community or working-class issues.

Communication Skills: Excellent writing, listening, and interpersonal abilities. Talent for fostering honest, meaningful interactions that help inform our content.

Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with social media tools, content management systems, and basic analytics platforms. Experience with Sprout Social and Notion is preferred but not required.

Passion for Civic Engagement: Deep interest in local journalism, democracy, and connecting with Wisconsin communities around relevant local issues.

Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
