Girls on the Run International is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. GOTR is a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experiences. Position Description

The Content and Communications Director is responsible for developing high-quality, persuasive content that drives action in target audiences, builds the reputation of the organization, and enhances the program experience. This position works closely with the VP of Marketing and Communications to define and achieve strategic objectives that advance the evolving and growing needs of Girls on the Run. This position requires a values-based leader who can inspire and motivate others, foster collaboration, and build authentic connections with internal and external teams to amplify the organization's mission. With focus and intention, their leadership will ensure diverse audiences understand our mission and feel welcome to engage with the organization.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Communication Strategy

  • Partner with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications and the senior leadership team to develop the organization’s positioning and messaging on key issues.
  • Develop tools, processes and trainings to ensure all communications maintain consistent and accurate messaging that reflects the organizational image and values of Girls on the Run.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive content strategy that aligns with the organization’s goals and objectives, ensuring consistency across all communication channels.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and campaigns, leveraging data and metrics to refine and improve future efforts.
  • Work closely with other departments to ensure cohesive and aligned messaging across the organization.
  • Track and report on key performance metrics for content and communications initiatives, adjusting strategy as necessary to improve outcomes.

Copywriting and Messaging

  • Leverage internal and external research to develop inspiring content and compelling cases for support across recruiting, marketing, fundraising, and reputation-building initiatives.
  • Lead the Communications Manager in the creation and editing of compelling content to raise awareness, build the brand and increase engagement including but not limited to blog content, newsletters, and email marketing Direct the creation of all messaging for digital and print marketing materials used by our network of 165+ councils across the United States and Canada.
  • Work closely with the Digital Marketing Manager to develop content for digital properties including organic and paid social media, website, and email marketing.
  • Collaborate with the Fundraising team on communication strategies and marketing campaigns that engage donors and supporters to drive revenue goals.
  • Work closely with the programming team to create marketing materials that position Girls on the Run as an expert in positive youth development, girls’ empowerment, and volunteer training and engagement.
  • Support the programming team by overseeing the copyediting process for curricula and program-delivery materials.
  • Oversee the distribution of content across key channels, ensuring optimization for each platform and audience segment, including social media, website, email, and print.

Internal Communications (Council Network)

  • Build strategies to effectively communicate key messages to council staff and board members.
  • Collaborate with various internal teams to facilitate announcements, program updates, and other communications.
  • Lead team in daily responsibilities including the production and distribution of weekly council e-newsletter, ongoing internal email communication, and the development of guides and council resources.

Corporate Communications

  • Maintain and update crisis communication plans to effectively manage and mitigate potential risks.
  • Oversee media relations, as needed.
  • Serve as an organizational spokesperson as needed.

Employees are always encouraged, and in occasional instances required, to participate in and contribute to these events.


  • While this position is remote, residency in one of the following states is required: CA, CT, FL, GA, IL, LA, NC, OR, PA, RI, SC, TX, VA, WA, WI, WY.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in communications in a high-paced, highly collaborative, and goal-driven environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  • Outstanding and concise written and verbal communication skills. Ability to excel in both technical and inspirational writing.
  • Strong presenter, compelling speaker, adept influencer, consensus-builder, and excellent communicator.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that are inclusive of all audiences with an ability to think critically and strategically about how a message is conveyed and received.
  • Proven expertise in developing communications strategies to drive brand relevance, differentiation, understanding and engagement.
  • Experience leading multiple projects at once, working in a dynamic environment, and ability to work under pressure.
  • Experience in nonprofit, education or youth development sectors is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of SEO principles and best practices, including keyword research, on-page optimization, and performance tracking to drive organic traffic and improve search engine rankings.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or a related field desired.
  • Experience managing remote teams and working in a virtual environment.

This is a remote, exempt, full-time position at 40 hours per week, offering a compensation range of $80,000 – $84,000, depending on experience.
