QUALIFICATIONS
Current RN licensure in West Virginia, Certified Diabetic Educator, BSN with 2 years of clinical experience or ASN with 4 years of clinical experience, including 1 year as a certified diabetes educator. Advanced degree (MSN) preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct and coordinate the Diabetes Program, oversee educational program preparation, supervise staff training, evaluate education materials, direct performance improvement initiatives, maintain ADA accreditation, and participate in diabetes-related research activities.

Directs the Diabetes Program, focusing on the care of the patient with diabetes. Provides administrative support and coordinates the management and operations of the International Diabetic Institute. Primary responsibilities include overseeing data management, patient and staff education, clinical outcomes, scheduling, advisory council, educational development and educational materials. Maintains American Diabetic Association (ADA) Accreditation for Outpatients.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Current West Virginia RN licensure, or appropriate state where services will be provided (may not be waived)
2. Certified Diabetic Educator
3. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) AND two (2) years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting with responsibilities reflecting direct management of patient care including education, planning, coordination, and delivery of services, AND 1 year experience as a certified diabetes educator.
OR
Associates Degree, Nursing (ASN) AND four (4) years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting with responsibilities reflecting direct management of patient care including education, planning, coordination, and delivery of services AND 1 year experience as a certified diabetes educator.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Advanced degree (MSN) preferred
2. Certification in area of specialty

1. Coordinates and oversees preparation and submission of education programs to meet national standards of accreditation for patients, nurses, dietitians, and pharmacists.
2. Supervises, trains, and promotes the development of staff and provides direction as needed in accordance with ANCC criteria. Assist staff with preparation for certification test
3. Reviews, evaluates, and maintains educational materials, supplies, equipment and resources used for diabetic education. This includes Nursing, Medical Residents, and Fellows
4. Evaluates and documents patient and staff response to education.
5. Directs and oversees Performance Improvement initiatives related to diabetes and identifies trends.
6. Guides and coordinates data collection.
7. Identifies opportunities for improvement in patient outcomes and participates in plans to enhance clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. This includes educational emails sent to unit educators.
8. Leads Performance Improvement activities as appropriate.
9. Participates in research activities specific to diabetes and related patient problems/diagnosis.
10. Maintains a database of ongoing research studies relevant to the diabetic patient: performs analysis of data and identifies trends.
11. Performs annual literature searches and analysis to identify changes in practice and/or new studies or outcomes and disseminate as appropriate. Ensures evidence based practice is followed.
12. Participates in interdisciplinary research utilization projects and research studies.
13. Provides administrative support and coordinates the management and operations of the Diabetic Institute.
14. Promotes the continuum of care in inpatient and outpatient infrastructure.
15. Develops annual strategic plan and program goals. Performs annual review of program and makes changes as necessary
16. Monitors operating budgets related to the program.
17. Assists in the creation, revision and review of policies and protocols for diabetic management that affects all nursing departments.
18. Maintains additions and deletions of products used for diabetic management to assure quality and cost.
19. Assumes clinical responsibility in the absence of other educators.
20. Oversees marketing and program preparation
21. Establishes and maintains relationships with community agencies, sponsors, support group and provides community support for diabetes education
22. Organizes and Participates in Performance Improvement activities as appropriate.
23. Supervises Diabetic Educators/ Staff Assistant
24. Other duties as assigned.
