Powell's Books, the nation's top independent bookseller, is looking for a Director of Marketing.
The Director of Marketing is accountable for corporate marketing functions and processes, developing and executing strategies that support Powell’s Books’ business objectives in alignment with the company’s strategic plan. This role focuses on developing strategic marketing initiatives while strengthening brand equity that deepens customer affinity and drives sales growth. Responsibilities include planning, implementation, performance monitoring, reporting, and analysis of marketing efforts geared toward customer acquisition, retention, and engagement. The Director of Marketing leads a high-performing marketing team through coaching, feedback, and goal setting. This position reports to the Chief Marketing Officer.
The position has an office at our Industrial warehouse as well as the ability to work from home. While the position is a hybrid of remote and onsite, Oregon residency is required.

Pay: $118k - $135k per year, depending on experience
Schedule: Monday through Friday, business hours, with occasional need to flex hours. This position is Full-time/exempt/salaried.

Position Summary:
The Director of Marketing is accountable for corporate marketing functions and processes, developing and executing strategies that support Powell’s Books’ business objectives in alignment with the company’s strategic plan. This role focuses on developing strategic marketing initiatives while strengthening brand equity that deepens customer affinity and drives sales growth. Responsibilities include planning, implementation, performance monitoring, reporting, and analysis of marketing efforts geared toward customer acquisition, retention, and engagement. The Director of Marketing leads a high-performing marketing team through coaching, feedback, and goal setting. This position reports to the Chief Marketing Officer.
Essential Functions:
- Develop, manage, and implement Powell’s comprehensive marketing plan and strategy across channels, with a focus on supporting store and online business objectives.
- Lead and manage teams responsible for Store Marketing, Online Marketing, , Advertising, Event Marketing, and Internal Creative Services.
- Drive customer acquisition and retention initiatives to support customer demand and loyalty through channels such as promotions, advertising, store merchandising, email marketing, social media, affiliate programs, and partnership marketing.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure marketing efforts align with and support company-wide goals, particularly in sales enablement.
- Partner with relevant teams on new initiatives for merchandising, programs, services, and offerings in stores and online.
- Work closely with the corporate management team to serve other departments by directing marketing resources toward the fulfillment of Powell’s company-wide goals.
- Assist in managing budget, financial planning, and expense control for marketing.
- Recruit, train, mentor, and develop a high-performing marketing team. Foster collaboration across departments to enhance business processes and marketing effectiveness.
- Continuously identify, and leverage industry and marketing trends to refine strategies and drive innovation.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent on-the-job experience; Master’s Degree a plus
- 5+ years of hands-on marketing experience; 5+ years of experience managing a team
- Strong management skills with the experience to initiate, drive, and manage cross-functional programs, and a history of leading and motivating direct reports
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Keen ability to identify business issues, formulate plans to resolve these issues, and effectively communicate the results to executive management
- Exceptional knowledge of marketing best practices – physical stores and e-commerce
- Proven ability to supervise and manage multiple projects and changing priorities while delivering superior results within given deadlines
- Strong oral, written, strategic thinking, presentation, and negotiation skills
- Absolute ability to maintain confidentiality
- Love of books and reading
