QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree, 8 years of experience in student support in higher education, and 3 years of supervisory experience. Preferred qualifications include a Doctoral Degree, bilingual in Spanish, and experience with minority or first-generation students.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and direct the New Student Programs department, develop and assess first-year engagement activities, manage new student orientation, and support student success initiatives. Responsibilities also include overseeing peer mentor recruitment, advising first-year students, managing office operations, and building relationships with student families.

SHORT DESCRIPTION
The Director of New Student Programs is responsible for strategic leadership in enhancing first-year student integration and success at University of the Incarnate Word, focusing on retention and personal development initiatives.
This is an internal opening and only current employees of UIW are eligible to apply.
- Develop, implement, and assess the efficacy of various first year engagement activities.
- Facilitate the integration of first-year students into the UIW community by coordinating activities designed to introduce students to university traditions and create a foundation for developing community.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- In collaboration with Admissions, assist in the development and implementation of New Student Orientations.
- Provide welcome remarks and facilitate the prayer at each orientation.
- Develop, implement, and assess the efficacy of various first-year student programs, built upon best practices, that promote student success and first year retention.
- Conduct 1:1 meetings with students who receive mid-term grades of “C-“or lower to develop plans for success.
- Implement required monthly 1:1 meetings, attendance checks, and tutoring requirements for students placed on academic probation during their first year.
- Recruit, select, and train peer mentors to promote first year retention.
- Supervise, manage, and assess peer mentors and their activities to ensure first year retention is promoted.
- Collaborate with the UIW Advising Office to provide advising and coaching services to first year students that promote personal and academic growth to ensure students possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for retention and persistence.
- Proactively engage first-year students to provide guidance and support for their personal and professional goals.
- In collaboration with the Office of Admissions, provide engagement communications and activities to first year students beginning at the time of paid confirmation.
- Assist with the coordination and promotion of course registration and engage with first year students and their families at summer orientations.
- In collaboration with other UIW departments, provide support, coaching, and engagement activities to assist first year students as they persist into their second year.
- In collaboration with the AVP, interpret, analyze, and utilize data to proactively identify incoming at-risk students and create early intervention initiatives built upon best practices to promote student success and retention.
- Manages the daily operations of the NSP Office, which includes, but is not limited to:
- Management of the physical space,
- Management of the NSP annual budget,
- Leadership and coordination/collaboration with all campus partners engaged in the development and implementation of programming, courses, and activities that benefit first year students.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with prospective and current student’s families by leading the Parent & Family Association and serving as Chair of the Advisory Board.
- Provide parents with monthly communications and host activities designed to increase parent engagement.
- Strong budget management skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents and colleagues.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Strong computer skills, especially with MS Office and Banner or similar student information systems.
- An understanding of the challenges for first generation and minority students.
- Ability to develop strategic plans and appropriate assessments related to the plans.
- Ability to effectively manage staff and student employees.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
- Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
- Eight (8) years of progressively responsible professional experience working in a student support setting in higher education.
- Three (3) years of experience supervising professional level staff.
- Doctoral Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field.
- Bilingual in Spanish language.
- Experience working with minority and/or first generation students.
- Experience in career or professional development activities.
- Ability to lift up to 10lbs of marketing supplies, etc…
- Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
- Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage potential and current students, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
