Position Summary
The Director of Philanthropy is a member of the Senior Management Team and is responsible for developing, managing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of the organizations fund development strategy and plan. The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for overseeing the solicitation of individuals, foundations, and corporate donors. The Director of Philanthropy spends time personally soliciting donors and as such must have strong relationship building and solicitation skills.The Director of Philanthropy currently reports to the Chief Executive Officer and supervises the Fund Development Team of five.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Provide general oversight of all development activities, manage the day-to-day operations of the development function, and monitor the adequacy of activities through coordination with the CEO.
In collaboration with the CEO, build an annual development plan that includes revenue projection, budgeting, all giving campaigns, planned gifts, capital projects, an alumnae association, and special events.
Develop and manage the departments annual expenses and collaborate closely with the Finance Team in creating monthly financial reports and periodic forecasting projections.
Identify, cultivate and solicit current and new funding sources.
Provide fundraising support to the CEO, helping to identify resource cultivation goals and support needs, prospecting donors, and leading or participating in asks, as appropriate.
Ensure that solicitation plans align with the engagement and cultivation initiatives of the council.
Develop and maintain relationships with key funders, board members, volunteers, and alumnae.
Supervise the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving to determine corporate and foundation prospects for both operational and capital funding with the best return on investment.
Manage Senior Manager of Individual Giving to divide prospects and portfolios, create fund appeals, and cultivate donors appropriately.
Collaborate closely with the Marketing and Communications team on all aspects of fundraising events.
Prepare departmental reports and summaries for the CEO on a timely basis and keep the Senior Management Team informed of progress.
Serve at the staff liaison to the Fund Development Committee of the Board.
Invest time in research and team collaboration to understand the continuing trends and best practices in fund development.
Collaborate with the CEO to implement diverse fundraising strategies to support strategic planning activities. Commit to bold fundraising goals and exponential increases in public revenue support year after year.
In partnership with the Marketing and Communications team, develop and coordinate donor-focused communications, including newsletters, e-blasts, social media content, invitations, and other engagement materials that enhance donor relations and amplify the organizations mission. Meet the growing needs of the organization with the goal of enhancing year-round fundraising activities that demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct for the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Successful cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, and a demonstrated working knowledge of all areas of fundraising.
Persuasive writing, strong verbal communication and the ability to interact at the executive level are required, including solicitation and negotiation.
Excellent presentation skills, ability to pitch individuals, foundations, and groups of prospects.
Charismatic presence with transparent style of communication that builds confidence and trust in donor relationships.
Demonstrated knowledge of proven fundraising principles and best practices.
Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and persuasively with all levels of the organization, including volunteer leadership, senior management and staff.
High degree of organizational, analytical, and project management skills; ability to anticipate risks, set and achieve goals and a creative approach to problem solving.
Strong inter-personal skills, motivational ability to foster collaborative teamwork, demonstrated tact and diplomacy in difficult or sensitive situations and ability to perform under pressure in a rapidly changing and multidimensional environment.
Ability to be an effective spokesperson for the GSGLA cause.
Ability to multi-task to meet competing deadlines.
Ability to spend time sitting, utilizing the computer, and standing and walking throughout the facilities.
Ability to travel via personal vehicle or public transportation to various facilities throughout the region.
Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.
Flexibility to attend evening and/or weekend meetings and/or events.
Able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of themself or others.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience
Minimum of 5-7 years of fund development experience, preferably in a broad range of activities and initiatives.
Previous management experience with a proven record of leadership.
Experience making cold calls and securing prospect visits with resilience and tenacity.
Strong foundation in budgeting, fiscal management, goal setting and goal evaluation.
Careful attention to detail while constantly multitasking and keeping strategic growth the primary focus.
Experience working with fundraising volunteers.
Experience using a customer relations management database system (Raisers Edge preferred).
Familiarity and experience in the planned giving process.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and customer relations management databases.
Experience as a Girl Scout is desirable.
