SHORT DESCRIPTION

The Director of Product will spearhead the formulation and execution of product strategy for Risk & Safety Solutions, overseeing the development and performance of innovative platforms to meet organizational goals and customer needs.

Reporting to the Risk & Safety Solutions (RSS) Executive Director, The Director of Product is a senior level leadership position, playing a pivotal role in spearheading the formulation and execution of RSS' product strategy. From conceptualization to delivery, the Director of Product orchestrates the entire product development lifecycle, aligns the product roadmap and product goals with RSS’ overall goals, market trends, and customer needs to ensure the RSS platforms are finely tuned to meet customer expectations and align with overarching goals.

In close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, technical architects, development teams, and a spectrum of IT professionals, the Director of Product plays a central role in shaping the RSS platforms and accompanying services to ensure successful product execution. This collaborative effort is aimed at constructing a robust platform built on a unified architecture that seamlessly integrates key aspects of RSS business operations.

With a focus on autonomy, the Director of Product establishes and drives departmental goals and objectives while upholding rigorous stewardship of resources in line with organizational imperatives. Prioritizing adherence to internal controls, overseeing the implementation of systems and procedures to safeguard departmental assets, ensuring optimal efficiency and effectiveness. Manages product performance and makes data-driven decisions.

Leads and inspires a team of IT Professionals, coordinating their activities to ensure that they meet key performance indicators (KPIs) while fostering collaboration with engineering, product design, marketing, and other departments. Manages direct and indirect reports staff to ensure alignment and compliance with UC Davis policy and procedures as well as RSS goals and mission.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, product management, product engineering, business administration, or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in personnel management, including staffing resource assessment, recruitment, training and development, work assignment, supervision, team building, performance evaluation, corrective/disciplinary action, and conflict resolution.
  • 4 or more years of experience in product management, within leadership roles, with a track record of successfully managing and launching products.
  • Experience prioritizing and planning product development initiatives, leading strategic and tactical planning and translating strategic planning into unit-specific goals, objectives, and activities.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of product management tools and processes, including proficiency in agile methodologies, product lifecycle management, market research techniques, and data analysis.
  • Expertise in creative problem-solving and adept collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written and communication skills to clearly and effectively articulate goals and objectives to a diverse audience, foster collaboration, negotiate effectively, build strong relationships, adeptly resolve conflicts, secure and/or provide clarifying information, and effectively communicate policy decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in computer science, product management, product engineering, business administration, or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing projects for which an Agile application development methodology is enforced.
  • Experience working in a corporate/entrepreneurial environment in a growth-oriented industry.
  • Knowledge of University personnel policies and procedures.
