Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class coordinates events in Downtown Newton. In addition, this position provides administrative support to the Main Street Director position. The Downtown Events Coordinator serves as an advocate for local businesses through promotion of Downtown Newton as a regional destination.

Work is performed under the general direction of the Mainstreet Director, and performance is evaluated on the basis of attainment of specific performance objectives, personal observations, and feedback from the Downtown Newton Development Association, merchants, stakeholders, sponsors, volunteers, and visitors.

  • Supports daily operational needs in executing event management
  • Secures event sponsorships and maintains expenses within projected budget
  • Researches new and creative ways to improve current and future event experiences in Downtown Newton
  • Oversees event logistics; coordinates with other departments
  • Sets up designated event activities on day of the event
  • Sets and maintains event calendar in collaboration with the Promotions Committee
  • Reviews and recommends website calendar content
  • Follows up post-event with sponsors and volunteers
  • Provides post-event reports to Main Street Director and Downtown Newton Development Association Chair
  • Collaborates with City departments to create annual marketing plans

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Teams
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks
  • Ability to work independently to complete assigned tasks
  • Ability to record and maintain accounting and meeting records
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local business owners, government officials, associates, sponsors, volunteers, and the general public
  • Ability to conduct independent research and prepare clear and precise reports
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to remain organized and prioritize tasks
  • Ability to learn NC Main Street reporting requirements in order to maintain accreditation as a Main Street Community

Requirements

Physical Requirements
This is primarily sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Work requires reaching, fingering, and repetitive motions, long periods of time at a computer desk, and series of meetings and conferences. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas and information by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive and understand information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze written or computer data, graphs and charts, financial and engineering data, and to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.

Working Conditions
Employee is subject to inside and outside working conditions. Most of the work is typically performed in a climate controlled office environment with sufficient lighting and no adverse conditions. When working outside, the employee may be subject to both cold and heat, weather, and insects.

Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalency is required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, marketing, or other field of study related to the nature of the work performed is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Special Requirements
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license
  • Professional project planning or community development experience preferred
  • Ability to speak, read, and write is Spanish a plus
