Environmental Technician I
LOCATION
50% office environment/50% field environment; travel between CERM office and various project sites as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Associates Degree in Natural/Physical Science, Environmental Health, Public Health, Engineering, or related field; or 2 years experience as an Environmental Technician. Valid Georgia Driver’s License, 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, and Asbestos Worker Certification within 60 days of hire.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Gather and analyze environmental data, evaluate pollutants in air, water, and soil, maintain an environmental database, assist in technical report preparation, maintain gas and fluid flow systems, ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and contribute to project documentation.

SHORT DESCRIPTION
Assist in addressing environmental issues through data collection and analysis, evaluate pollutant levels, and maintain a safe working environment while complying with legal requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assists in addressing environmental issues by providing information and commentary pertinent to deliberations
- Gathers environmental data by applying agriculture, chemistry, meteorology, and engineering principles
- Determines characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials and substances by conducting chemical, physical, laboratory, and field tests, using ph meter, chemicals, autoclaves, centrifuge spectrophotometer, microscope, analytical instrumentation, and chemical laboratory equipment
- Evaluates atmospheric pollutants by collecting and analyzing samples of gases from smokestacks; gathering other air samples and meteorological data as directed
- Assesses water pollutants by collecting and analyzing water samples from streams and lakes, raw, semi-processed or processed water, and industrial waste water
- Determines chemical composition and nature of land pollutants by collecting and analyzing soil, silt, and mud
- Collects, analyzes and summarizes monitoring data; maintains and updates environmental database using data collected
- Prepares summaries and charts by gathering and testing samples; analyzing and summarizing findings and trends
- Assists in the preparation of technical reports that analyze and interpret water quality data; researches and assembles quantitative data concerning the quality of water; writes and maintains spill reports
- Assist with maintaining gas and fluid flow systems, chemical reaction systems, mechanical equipment, and other test instrumentation by installing; operating; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Completes research by conducting bacteriological and other tests
- Maintain the stability and reputation of the organization by complying with legal and waste management requirements
- Conserve resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
Accounting/Budgeting Activities:
- Ascertain budgeted hours for project activities from project specialist and notify Project Manager and Project Specialist when allocated project hours have been reached
Business Development Activities:
- Provide Business Development Group with marketing leads as they arise
Project Execution Activities:
- Conduct project research as directed by project specialist
- Maintain equipment (inventory, maintenance, calibration) to include providing leadership on
- technical operations
- Assist with authoring project reports as directed by Project Specialist
- Develop and maintains accurate field data and project documentation
- Provide specialization vendors with project information as directed by the Project Specialist
Quality Assurance/ Risk Management/Safety:
- Ascertain project assurance plan from Project Specialist
- Monitor field activities for project assurance plan compliance
- Follow project safety requirements
- Report any significant risk exposures or occurrence to Project Manager through Project Specialist in
writing
- Work with project management team to develop mitigation recommendations for documented risk
exposures
Technical Activities:
- Review technical publications on regular basis

Required Experience
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience
- Associates Degree in Natural/Physical Science, Environmental Health, Public Health, Engineering, or a related degree or 2 years of experience as an Environmental Technician or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS:
- Valid Georgia Driver’s License and maintain a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets company policy standards
- 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and Asbestos Worker Certification required or must obtain certifications within 60-days of hire
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to stand for hours at a time
- Must be able to perform physical labor and strenuous tasks e.g., heavy lifting (up to 50lbs.), frequent bending, and crouching, as well as move or carry related objects or materials
- Must be able to wear and use personal respirator equipment and other forms of personal protective equipment (PPE)
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions and temperatures
- 50% office environment/50% field environment
- Travel between CERM office and various project sites as required
- Available to respond to environmental emergencies for 24-hour on call services during a work shift as needed
- Must be willing and able to travel out of town on short notice for weeks or months at a time as required
