Job Description
This is an ergonomics and human factors Subject Matter Expert (SME) role that supports and collaborates with the Environmental Safety & Health (EHS) field deployed staff to identify, evaluate, and mitigate hazards in the workplace. This Safety and Health Professional Level IV individual ideally comes to NREL with an established level of professional communication, who can tailor messages to their audience, and effectively engage with various stakeholders throughout the organization. This role is responsible for maintaining the organization’s written policies regarding ergonomics management, meeting compliance objectives, as well as meeting our growing number of staff’s needs in helping to improve their workstation ergonomics in the lab, field, and office workspaces. This person should have an innovative mindset that can provide ergonomic design guidance on new research activities via providing cutting-edge safety support to match our cutting-edge science performed daily. This person is responsible for performing office- and industrial-ergonomics evaluations and risk assessments for our staff, providing superior customer service, writing reports that provide insightful recommendations, and following up to verify improvements have been accomplished over time. This individual can work independently and engages in frequent interactions with researchers, support staff, and managers alike.
Must have previous experience conducting ergonomic assessments in both the office and industrial environments and be skilled in developing specific recommendations for improvement via high-quality written reports.
This role features someone who has a deep understanding of the science of human performance and ergonomics and its application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field. General knowledge of and experience in managing other safety and health related disciplines is a plus.
Knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures, and established practices related to human factors and ergonomics is required. The Individual must have strong communication, empathy, time management, and problem-solving skills to be effective in this role. Role also requires the ability to use various computer software programs and find ways to use data to drive decisions.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert. Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Perform ergonomic workstation evaluations in industrial-, laboratory-, office- and remote-based work environments. Conduct employee chair fit test consultations and prioritize and respond to pain and discomfort issues raised by staff or sent to the ergonomics inbox. Produce quality ergonomic evaluation summary documentation (individual reports and trending analysis). Recommends corrective measures accordingly.
- Interface and communicate with a wide variety of NREL staff, line management, and DOE counterparts through the delivery of presentations and reports related to ergonomics and ESH performance.
- Collaborate with research, operational staff, and subcontractors to evaluate risks of new or modified work activities and proactively implement continuous environmental, safety, and health (ESH) improvement.
- Assist in the development of hazard identification and control documents as part of research/operations projects or activity life cycle.
- Apply ESH technical skills to tasks within areas of expertise such as ergonomics, human performance, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, and other areas individually or in combination.
- Participate in ESH inspections, audits, and oversight assessments.
- Respond to staff inquiries, concerns, and requests for assistance on ESH matters including guidance on ESH program implementation and/or interpretation.
- Assist with Ergonomics training development and delivery to verify it accurately reflects current requirements and best practices.
- Support accident/incident investigation and causal analysis as needed. Follow-up on corrective action implementation.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $95,500 - $171,900
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
