Fundraising/Marketing Manager

Part Time University Place, WA, United States of America

Summary

This is one of the most meaningful and important roles that a fundraiser could ever have.

Over the last sixty years we have lost close to 4 billion birds across the US, and it is projected that by 2030 we may have lost 50% of all US birds within 65 years. Some PNW birds like the Rufous Hummingbird have seen their numbers decline by over 67%.

Birds are in trouble and Tahoma Bird Alliance is one of their best hopes for the future.

Tahoma Bird Alliance is a nonprofit that is at the forefront of conservation across Pierce County and works in close collaboration with County and City governments and other partners. The charity changed its name from the Tahoma Audubon Society in January 2024 in recognition of the divisive barriers that the Audubon name created and has introduced inclusive programs such as Birdability and 10,000 Trees for Tacoma - an initiative to plant 10,000 trees across the city of Tacoma over four years in disadvantaged areas to address ecological injustice. We are not just protecting existing habitat, we are pushing back and creating new habitat.

Since our name change, we have increased our revenue by 16% and we are now in a position to expand our team to grow our revenue streams.

We are looking for an experienced and achievement driven fundraiser to lead our fundraising efforts and work with a small team of enthusiastic professionals. We offer a part time role with significant flexibility and for the right candidate we can agree flexible hours with some home working based on achieving agreed objectives.

This is a role that would be ideal for a candidate that wants to reduce their working hours and still play an important role in helping birds and nature.

Responsibilities

The number one responsibility is to raise funds. We have several existing revenue streams including individual donations, membership, events such as Birdathon, corporate sponsorship, grants and legacies. We see a lot of opportunity with the existing revenue streams, but we are also open to other opportunities.

We have an inhouse graphic designer who also looks after our website and an Executive Director with fundraising experience, so there is significant support within the organization and opportunity for brainstorming ideas.

We have a limited marketing budget, so we are looking for a creative candidate who is able to leverage limited funds.

The successful candidate will be expected to attend board meetings when required and to design and present the organizations Fundraising and Marketing Plan. The 2025 Plan and Budgets are already set, but the successful candidate will have an opportunity to review and change elements of the plan within overall financial parameters.

Other duties will include:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies
  • Identifying potential donors and funding opportunities.
  • Manage and optimize fundraising campaigns across multiple channels, including social media marketing, print advertising, and online platforms.
  • Create compelling stories to encourage donations
  • Analyze performance to assess effectiveness and make data-driven decisions.
  • Manage budgeting for fundraising activities, ensuring efficiency.
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing donors while identifying new prospects for support.
  • Organize fundraising events and initiatives that engage the community and promote awareness of our mission.

Qualifications

The most important thing we are looking for is a track record of solid achievement of fundraising growth. It doesn't really matter what your educational qualifications are as long as you can demonstrate success in fundraising.

The second thing we are looking for is belief and commitment to our mission. What we are doing is vitally important and time sensitive, so we need someone who believes in our mission and appreciates how important it is to generate funds. Birds are in trouble, and we need someone who really wants to make a difference.

The third thing we are looking for is someone who is naturally collaborative and open to ideas, and able to persuade other people in turn, and who also has the courage of their convictions.

Fourth qualification is having a sense of fun. We are a serious nonprofit, with a serious mission, but we also believe that we all need to enjoy what we are doing.

Other skills/requirements we are looking for:

  • Proven experience in fundraising or related fields, with a strong understanding of marketing principles.
  • Proficiency in social media marketing strategies and tools.
  • Familiarity with technology for managing online fundraising content.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and adapt
  • Budgeting and fundraising management experience is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to craft persuasive messages that resonate with diverse audiences.
  • A creative mindset with the ability to think outside the box when developing campaigns.
  • Campaign and Event Management experience

If you already have contacts within the giving community in Pierce County that would be an added bonus, but not essential.

Remuneration and Working Hours

We want to provide a flexible opportunity for the right candidate and while we are looking at a 32 hour, 4 day week, we are open to the successful candidate setting their own hours while working within core hour parameters. We are prepared to reduce the number of hours required for the right candidate.

We are looking at an hourly rate of $33 but this may be negotiable for the right candidate.

What does success look like?

The successful candidate will achieve our 2025 revenue budget which is approx. $100,000 uplift on our projected 2024 numbers. We feel that is achievable with a fundraising manager on board. We recently received a $40,000 grant split over two years, our membership revenue increased by around $15,000 in 2024 and is likely to increase by at least the same amount in 2025 so there are already revenue uplifts in the pipeline which mean that achieving the 2025 revenue budget should be achievable.

This is a role where you can really make a difference.

To apply please email your resume with an application letter setting out why you would be right for this role and why it appeals to you to info@tahomabirdalliance.org

Any applications without a resume or application letter or fundraising experience will not be considered.
