One year of college education, valid Michigan State driver's license, eligible for college credit, strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and Adobe), excellent communication and interpersonal skills, high level of organization and attention to detail, and strong customer service abilities. Preferred qualifications include two years of education/work experience in marketing or event planning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in event management, customer service, marketing, social media content management, designing promotional materials, sales support, volunteer management, and day-to-day operations of the Detroit Sports Commission. Engage in projects to secure amateur and national sporting events.

SHORT DESCRIPTION
The Detroit Sports Commission is offering a paid internship for spring and summer 2025, focused on sports event management, marketing initiatives, and sales support, providing valuable experience in the sports industry.
DETROIT SPORTS COMMISSION SPRING/SUMMER INTERNSHIP
The Detroit Sports Commission (DSC) is searching for and interviewing possible candidates for internships for spring and summer sessions with emphasis on the summer of 2025 working on events, sales and marketing initiatives. The DSC is a non-profit subsidiary of the Visit Detroit and hosts amateur sporting events in the Metro Detroit area. The DSC works with organizations such as the NCAA, AAU, USSSA, MHSAA, and USA Olympic sports.
INTERNSHIP DETAILS
Location: Detroit, MI
Hours: Students will be expected to work 15-28 hour workweeks from April to August. Before or during events, hours may exceed 40 hours in one week and could involve some nights and weekends, and Labor Day weekend. A work schedule will be developed at the beginning of the internship.
Position Type: Paid Internship
Description: The internship will focus on several projects and events, including:
Apr 26-27: 2025 Can-Am Classic (Volleyball)
The internship will offer experience in sports event management, as well as experience in marketing, communications, and sales. You will assist in, but will not be limited to:
- Educating and building awareness of various sporting events

Event Management that includes:
- Customer Service, Hospitality Management, Security/Access Control, Signage/Décor, Facilitating/Ordering Awards, Facility Management, and PR and Marketing
- Social Media and Website Content Management
- Designing marketing and promotional materials and programs
- Sales Support (Bid & Proposal Creation)
- Volunteer Management
- Educating and building awareness of the Prep Kickoff Classic to ensure maximum coverage and attendance.
- Aiding Detroit Sports Commission staff in day-to-day operations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- One year of college education
- Unrestricted valid Michigan State driver’s license and satisfactory driving history
- Eligible to receive college credit
- Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and Adobe software
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, along with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage changing demands
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with all team members and customers
- High level of organization, initiative, energy, and attention to detail
- Strong customer service with the ability to troubleshoot and handle pressure situations
- Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and Adobe software
- Must possess and demonstrate the highest level of integrity and ethical standards
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of a combination of formal education and work experience
- Marketing, sports marketing, or event planning experience/education
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Extended periods of sitting and standing with occasional to extended periods of walking
- Prolonged use of desktop/laptop computer and peripheral equipment
- Occasional to frequent bending, stooping, standing, and carrying
- Must be in good physical condition with the ability to lift and move items of up to 50 lbs.
- Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays
- Occasional work outdoors in all weather conditions
