Senior Director, Development
LOCATION
West Michigan, specifically the Grand Rapids Programmatic Hub; hybrid work environment with mostly remote work.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in philanthropy, communication, business, marketing, journalism, or related field; CFRE certification preferred; 7 years of experience in non-profit fund development roles, including major gifts and corporate giving.

SHORT DESCRIPTION
The Senior Director will lead fundraising efforts in West Michigan, overseeing a team to achieve revenue goals while building relationships with donors and community partners.
The Senior Director works closely with the Executive Director, Fund Development and Grants, as well as the Chief Growth Officer. Samaritas offers a supportive, hybrid work environment with the flexibility of mostly remote work.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with the Chief Growth Officer, the Executive Director and west Michigan program leadership to understand the organizational and program needs and strategies. Be a valued and active partner within the Grand Rapids’ Hub.
- Cultivate and successfully manage a personal portfolio to achieve $300K+ revenue goal.
- Plan, lead, and assure implementation of strategies to develop Grand Rapids’ donors and contributions in support of the organization. Identify and understand essential connections between corporate, individual, and community philanthropic opportunities and ensure the team pursues cohesive strategies with significant return on investment.
- Maintain active membership and participation in key community networking and leadership organizations, events, and conferences to advance the Samaritas brand, mission, partnerships, and pipeline acquisition efforts.
- Coordinate the implementation of the new Corporate Partner Program with corresponding special corporate events and donor receptions/tours/presentations for west Michigan, in collaboration with the Senior Director, Corporate and Community Engagement (east Michigan) and Corporate Manager(s)/Major Gifts Directors.
- Ensure that fund development is carried out in keeping with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
- Partner with Strategic Business Communications and Programs in implementing Development campaigns.
Job Qualifications
Education, Training, and Licensure/Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in philanthropy, communication, business, marketing, journalism or related field of study or equivalent experience preferred.
- Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) certification preferred.
Experience
- Seven years’ experience in non-profit fund development roles including major gifts and corporate giving preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Proven success in meeting and exceeding fundraising goals in the Grand Rapids’ community, across individual, corporate, and community philanthropy.
- Ability to effectively lead staff to meet organization and department objectives.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple and complex projects.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to prepare and write proposals, speeches, cases for support, editorials and manuals. Strong public speaking skills.
- Ability to read, write and speak fluent English.
- Ability to effectively plan work to meet organization and department objectives.
- Possesses the capability to investigate and resolve complex issues. Demonstrates an inquisitive nature. Proficient in dissecting and analyzing programs and data to identify trends and determine root causes.
- Ability to relate effectively and work interdependently with all levels of staff, and with general public, congregations, corporations and foundations.
- Knowledge of and ability to use with sophistication, computer software such as Microsoft office programs and in particular, Raisers Edge, our donor database system.
Additional Work Requirements
- Automobile travel required. Valid unrestricted driver’s license with good driving record. Valid proof of automobile insurance.
- Extended and evening hours often required.
