Small Business Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS
1-3 years of experience engaging with small businesses, cultural competency, strong communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and social media, bilingual in preferred languages such as Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Cantonese, and intimate knowledge of the Tenderloin neighborhood.

SHORT DESCRIPTION
TLCBD seeks a Small Business Coordinator to enhance engagement with local businesses in the Tenderloin, support their growth through outreach and resources, and facilitate community improvement initiatives.
TLCBD’s Small Business Coordinator (SBC) engages a broad range of small neighborhood businesses in TLCBD programs through outreach, communication, marketing, and events. This organizing work builds upon TLCBD’s block group model in bringing stakeholders together and supporting them with consistent facilitation, information-sharing, and resources to achieve programmatic, physical, or policy improvements in the Tenderloin. The SBC collaborates with all TLCBD programs to share information back from the small business community and brings resources, opportunities, technical assistance, and direct advocacy strategies through continuous engagement.
This position will report to TLCBD’s Director of Community & Business Engagement and work closely with the Community Events Coordinator who implements community improvement projects and events, on a variety of projects from short-term campaigns, physical improvement strategies and projects, community events and long term, deep community building. This position is primarily in-office but will require going out to the community to work with small businesses on an as needed basis. This position will be compensated depending on the experience and skill set of the applicant.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Collaborate and engage with small businesses to foster relationships and support their growth and development.
- Oversee grant management processes and offer ongoing support to small businesses, ensuring successful application and utilization of funding resources.
- Manage and maintain internal client databases, including Raiser’s Edge, Small Business Central, and GMS, ensuring data accuracy and efficient access.
- Engage small business owners in organizing in a place-based way, utilizing the block group model, with a focus on commercial corridors and safe passage path - to share information and resources, develop relationships, and take unified action (both in stewardship and in policy).
- Attend various meetings with small business owners, property owners and supporting CBOs, and with the Tenderloin Business Coalition. Must facilitate as needed.
- Gather, document, and share information on community resources relevant to small business, bring new and/or under-utilized services to Tenderloin businesses (i.e., SBA, SF Small Business Alliance, EDC, business improvement and support services).
- Work with the Director of Community & Business Engagement and Community Events Coordinator to prioritize and implement physical improvement strategies and projects based on community consultation.
- Support Director of Community & Business Engagement to develop outreach plans for TLCBD programming across small businesses in the Tenderloin
- Advance TLCBD’s framework and values through advocacy and relationships with businesses owners/property owners.
- Develop stories, draft flyers, and distribute information in various forms, both digitally and in-person, as well as generating content.
- Provide and/or manage translation services including written text, flyers and in-person interpretation to enhance equity and inclusion.
- Support Director of Community & Business Engagement in collecting, analyzing, and reporting program data.
- Support programmatic outreach, engagement, and events; including integration and adoption (and small business owner training and engagement) on TL Small Business Marketing Campaign, social media and cross-marketing; and hosting cameo events with influencers in the TL to draw attention to restaurants, retail, entertainment and events.
- Various other duties as designated by Director of Community & Business Engagement.
Required Skills/Experience:
- At least 1-3 years of experience providing outreach or engaging with small businesses in the Tenderloin or similar communities.
- Ability to lead in diverse communities, high level cultural competency, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.
- Ability to work professionally and respectfully with a broad group of stakeholders: residents, businesses, community members, property owners, volunteers, city officials and politicians, TLCBD Board members, and all TLCBD stakeholders.
- Demonstrate organizational and communication skills with a high degree of maturity, confidence and compassion in communicating across diverse audiences.
- Exceptional written and public speaking skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, Airtable, and Adobe, with the ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies.
- Demonstrates compassionate and empathetic communication, effectively engaging and empowering others in a way that fosters leadership development through a "servant leadership" approach.
- Should be comfortable using social media platforms as the role will occasionally require leveraging them to promote our mission and engage with the community.
- Bilingual: Fluency in preferred languages Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Cantonese.
- Intimate knowledge of the Tenderloin neighborhood, either as a resident or professional (highly preferred).
