The New Children's Museum is seeking a Grants Manager to secure funding through grant proposals, supporting its mission to foster creativity and inclusion in children through art.

The New Children’s Museum’s (NCM) mission is to spark creativity, exploration, and a sense of belonging through interactive art experiences. Located in downtown San Diego, the New Children’s Museum collaborates with contemporary artists to design and create art installations and educational programs for children. The Museum brings families together in a rich educational environment that fosters creativity and expression. 2.6 million guests have visited the downtown location since doors opened in 2008, including 242,495 visitors in 2023.

POSITION SUMMARY
The New Children’s Museum is seeking an experienced grant writer with a record of fundraising success to join our development team as the Grants Manager. Reporting to either the Chief Strategic Advancement Office or the Director of Development (depending on experience), the Grants Manager will be responsible for prospecting, writing, and securing the majority of NCM’s grants from corporations, foundations, and government agencies that support NCM’s mission and work. The ideal candidate will possess excellent writing and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across departments and teams.
As a member of NCM’s Advancement Team, the Grants Manager must be committed to teamwork and be able to successfully manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, adjust to changing circumstances, and demonstrate confidence working with a diverse team.
The Grants Manager currently does not have any supervisory responsibilities. This position will work in close collaboration with the Director of Development toward securing approximately $1 million annually from granting institutions.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Conduct the full range of activities required to successfully write, submit, and manage grant proposals, including preparing grant proposals and budgets, to federal, state, local, and private foundation funding sources.
- Research funding opportunities that align with the short-term and long-term funding needs of NCM.
- Maintain and update NCM’s grants database of applications, reports, and awards or denials.
- Prepare, compile, and coordinate submitting the required grant reporting and grant budgets that align with funding objectives.
- Maintain effective working relationships with funder’s Program Officers.
Required Qualifications:
- Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree. Minimum of 4 years of experience in a nonprofit grant writing role with a demonstrated track record of success for government, private, and corporate funders
- Education requirements can be substituted for additional experience.
- Must be a highly skilled writer with the ability to write for government, foundation, and corporate funders.
- The ideal candidate must be:
- self-motivated
- able to manage simultaneous projects and priorities, with a work ethic to meet deadlines.
- detail oriented, organized, reliable, flexible, and professional.
- Computer/Office Equipment Skills: Must be comfortable working in PC/Windows-based environments. Must have strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Language Skills: Fluency in English is required.
- Schedule: Hybrid role, available after first 90-days. Ability to work nights and weekends periodically.
preferred QUALIFICATIONS:
- More than 6 years of previous nonprofit grant writing experience is preferred.
- Prior experience grant writing within the arts, education and creative youth development spaces is highly preferred.
- Experience with CRMs, prospecting and/or project management systems.
- Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish preferred.
- Other Preferred Skills:
- Experience with Altru database is strongly preferred
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
- Compensation: The salary range for this position is $70,000-$80,000 and is commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, regular, exempt position.
